Just when you were starting to forget the Bates Garage ever existed, there are hints of progress on the site it left behind. The Detroit Experience Factory Tweet-tipped us that the lot has been encircled with a tall, chain-link fence, possibly indicating something construction-related is on the way. Dan Gilbert has long envisioned filling the site with another new parking/retail development. The Downtown Development Authority agreed to sell Gilbert the site for $1.5M last summer, but only under the condition he redevelop it within 18 months. Presumably, that clock is still ticking.

By 2018, a brand new apartment community will open in Eastern Market at the corner of Russell and Alfred streets. The 82-unit Russell Flats project, headed by Jonna Luxury Homes, will begin construction next spring.
Detroit home values rose 6.2 percent since last year
In July, home values across the country rose 5.1 percent year-over-year to a median $187,300, while rents increased 2.2 percent to a median monthly $1,408. This was the forty-eighth straight month that national home values have appreciated.
