It's an unholy amount of real estate for $6,700 but someone has just purchased Woods Cathedral in the tax foreclosure auction from Wayne County. The buyer, a gallery owner, wrote to Curbed explaining that they are in the process of assessing the damage caused by abandonment but ultimately want to rent it out as studio space for artists and designers. The purchase came from a first-time auction buyer who was initially interested in other properties and describes this purchase as sort of "an impulse buy."
According to Detroit Urbex photos and text, the place is not in great shape.
The church closed sometime between 2006 and 2008, the last year that the church submitted an annual report to the state of Michigan. During that time, the copper roof was stripped off, leading to heavy water damage in the sanctuary. The church later became the site of rave dance parties in 2008 and 2010, leading to even more damage. Most of the materials inside the church were broken or dismantled in 2012 by two California artists who used them as part of an art installation project.
