As summer wanes and Detroiters ponder Up North possibilities, the question arises: if money wasn't an issue, what kind of vacation home would you buy? Michael Moore knows the answer. And he probably found Roger Smith, given that Moore's former beach house on Torch Lake is listed at a staggering $5.2 million. Who else could afford that neighborhood but the former GM CEO or his ilk? Ah, yes. A documentary filmmaker with an extensive collection of ball caps.
Moore's custom-built former retreat, a 7-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom, eleven thousand square foot log palace right on Torch Lake, has so many amenities and luxurious finishes, we'd need at least six posts to fully describe it. Built in 2010, this house has an elevator (of course), a gym (more of a surprise), a guest cottage, and an art studio. Surrounded by lush woods, the house has beach access, and the realtor promises "panoramic views of Torch Lake" from the master bedroom.
While the theater has merely been framed (we feel cheated, somehow), the home has a library, so you could forego the in-house movie theater experience and just read a book. Or enjoy lavish baths in one of the many jetted tubs. If you love Michael Moore, buying this place means soaking in his lingering ambiance, not to mention the very real possibility of seeing other famous Michiganders—Eminem and Kid Rock reportedly have property nearby. If you hate Moore (and some people do, we're told), you have the pleasure of giving his ex-wife $5.2 million dollars for a house he's not allowed to live in anymore.
Any way you cut it, this is one decadent slice of Pure Michigan realness. Start saving today, and in just a few (hundred) years, you, too, can enjoy the Torch Lake home's five fireplaces, its nearly four acres of grounds, and red carpet views of one of Northern Michigan's most beautiful lakes.
