Fresh Off the Boat: Photo Essay On Detroit's 'Burbs (Lawns)

Photos by James Naylor for Boat Magazine.

Last week, we got pretty excited about the release of Boat Magazine's Detroit-focused issue. But don't think that means the publication stayed just within our 138.8 square miles. London-based photog James Naylor spent a week in the burbs to capture, well... the scene. Or lack thereof. At times serene and at other times deliberately boring, his shots capture the feeling that these places are the opposite of blight but also the opposite of culturally interesting. Judging by the powerful fertilizer and just-clipped-by-a-lawnmower action, it would seem the 'burbs are for lawn maniacs. Do they make tee-shirts with that slogan yet?
