Vacancy

It costs a lot of money for some Detroit houses to sit around doing nothing. The city has spent $16 million boardeding up or demolishing them but has only taken down 4,100 structures of the 10,000 that Mayor Bing has planned on removing by 2013. Since June, they've blown through $1.4 million to board up 6,000 structures; in 2010, 23 % of the housing stock was vacant. [The Detroit News]
