Ruminations on Ruin Porn: Looking at and/or Taking Photos of Abandoned Stuff is Bad For you Except for When it is Good

Andrew Moore' photo book Detroit Disassembled has been around since April 2010, but a new rumination on ruin porn in Detroit via the Awl has it front-and-center all over again.

Our newest addition to the ruin porn debate offers up a caption to the above image which reads “Whoa, bro.” Which is to suggest its not such a great representation of the real Detroit. Nonetheless, he's all for ruin porn and has some harsh words for local boosterism. Note that white people in Detroit (Utopians!) can be identified by love of urban farming, $100 homes or bicycling.

In a nutshell, “Lazy Journalists Love Photos of Abandoned Stuff,” but Detroit is disappearing so snap a photo and learn your lesson from the rust belt before it is too late. Somehow this all ends on a mentioned that Slows BBQ is overexposed, but don't worry! We can all still eat there because Choire Sicha thinks it is delicious and said so in the comments.
