Jeff Brouws, A Photographer Fixated on the Urban Core

The photos are all pre-2009, but a recent post from American Suburb X reminded us of how much we like Jeff Brouws. His series “It Don’t Exist – The Impact of Sprawl and Suburban Build-out on Inner City America” aims the camera at Detroit several times. He's interested in suburban sprawl, but his photos focus on what is left behind in the urban areas after it occurs.

"Having photographed in inner city environments for over 15 years it dawned on me recently that — despite all the destitution and abandonment — there was liveliness there that’s missing in the more regimented suburban environments we encounter every day." · JEFF BROUWS: “It Don’t Exist – The Impact of Sprawl and Suburban Build-out on Inner City America” (2009) [ASX]
