Fourteen Years Ago Today, Detroit Imploded The Hudson's Department Store Building

New, 9 comments

Here's a little history lesson via HistoricDetroit.org:

On this date 14 years ago —at 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 24, 1998— the Hudson's Department Store was imploded. The Big Store had closed in 1983, and employees had moved out in 1990. There were some proposals to try to save the beloved landmark, but demolition won out. In the 14 years since it was leveled, nothing has been done with the site save for an underground parking garage. It now looks like a girder farm. You Tube has some dramatic video clips of the building becoming a giant pile of dust and rubble; the 25-story building occupied an entire city block.
