Mexicantown's Mercado Building Will Finally Be Put To Use

New, 2 comments

Mexicantown's Mercado Building has been an empty municipal money pit since construction ended in 2008, but the attractive building's long-awaited day in the sun has finally arrived. Yesterday, Ford proclaimed that the Mercado would serve as the headquarters of its "Operation Brighter Future - Detroit" initiative, which will inject $10M into Mexicantown community services.
Originally intended as a community business incubator, the Mercado was hemmed in by construction on the nearby Gateway Project, becoming the center of what one city official called a "perfect storm" of burdensome financing and mismanagement. We'd just call that "Detroit."
