Meet The Seafoam Palace: Former Lumber Company Office To Be Transformed Into an Arts Center

New, 5 comments

Welcome to the Seafoam Palace (seafoam not pictured). This is a former lumber company office that a group of artists got together to purchase after one of them found it listed on Craigslist, of all places. Who knew there were such gargantuan wonders to be found alongside missed connections and used bikes? Only in Detroit! At the time the owners were asking $65,000, but dropped the price to $35,000. Eventually the group closed on it for a mere $26,000. It happens to be a whopping 13,000 square feet and is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Frederic M. Sibley Lumber Company Office Building. The group plans to turn it into an arts organization with workshops, classes, and performances, but it will be a long process. The name comes from the paint on the interior (guess what color?) which also has some pretty fabulous glassed-in office spaces.
