I think this is symptomatic of a larger Michigan mentality, not just Detroit. Outside our two most prominent enclaves of regional sustainability (Ann Arbor and the Grand Traverse area) there is deep nostalgia for the industrial era and a strong predilection towards favoring corporate identity and authority.
