City Council is not in favor of Mayor Bing's plan to demolish the Brewster-Douglass public housing complex. It's not that they want to save it, it's just that gosh darn, people keep whining to them about those abandoned houses attracting vermin and drug dealers and they want those taken down first. And there is another issue, the city has $20 million in federal grants for demo but there is a May 2 deadline to use it; the Planning and Economic Development Committee questioned whether the administration was choosing this big, expensive project just to avoid losing the funds. To sum it up: "This is not a very well-thought-out plan," Councilman Ken Cockrel Jr. told the administration. [Freep]
