A Month Later, Zero Progress Made on Packard Plant Demo

Amateur photographers and art students rejoice! In a shocking twist, the owner of the Packard Plant who has no money to demolish the Packard Plant has not yet demolished the Packard Plant. A month after it was announced that the owner of the Packard Plant Dominic Cristini planned to begin demolition of the crumbling building within a month, absolutely nothing has been done. The Detroit Free Press reports today that "no one has applied for permits to demolish the building" and also notes, "A key step before demolition is removing asbestos in the plant, but the state Department of Environmental Quality said no one has submitted a plan for asbestos removal." The estimated cost of this demolition project will be about $20 million. Looks like all that panicky picture-taking and grabbing souvenir pieces of concrete rubble was a bit premature. Grab your cameras, kiddies - Detroit's answer to Springfield's burning tire pile lives!
