Can you pay $500 a month for 12,000 square feet of space in Corktown, Eastern Market or Midtown? Of course not! That's why the eight local artists that formed the Chocolate Cake Design Collective chose an east-side workspace in a former toy warehouse on Van Dyke Avenue. "The space that we have here, we can't get anywhere else," said Arnold, who interned New York and Chicago, and was recently in Spain, places where people expressed amazement at the space opportunities in Detroit.
