People Mover 2.0

It may only be 3.3 miles long, but somehow Detroit's light rail plan took up 1,200 pages in proposal form. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood (or a summarizing intern who really hates his life right now) will be done reading it in late May in time for a meeting with Mayor Dave Bing, Gov. Rick Snyder and M-1 backers. M-1 plans to charge $1.50 a ride and anticipates 1.8 million riders in its first year of operation starting in August 2015. That's down from an estimated 3 million riders when the route would have gone 9.3 miles from downtown to Eight Mile at the Oakland County border. [The Detroit News]
