Comment of the Day

Where did you get the impression that taxes and crime here are bad? Probably from the national media or other people's impressions of Detroit. Now I'm not going to say that we don't have an unacceptably high crime rate, or that we probably pay too much in taxes and don't receive enough back in services. However, crime and taxes aren't necessarily major daily issues. Sure, I will worry more about what could be stolen from my house or make sure to be more alert when I'm walking around Detroit than, say, Brooklyn. And I definitely didn't receive 2.5 percent of my income's worth in city services this year, but then again I'm not a sociopathic anti-tax fanatic. Taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society and I honestly don't mind paying them. -jayarem [Ask Curbed]
