Kids don't play outside without supervision anymore. Can we blame the burbs? Salon argues that in general, crime is at a 40-year low, but that nervous parents are still ruining urban life. “The idea that we should keep kids in cars and hover at the park and be with them 24/7 — it started in the suburbs and became the norm for parenting.” How about you Detroit parents? Care to weigh in? Would you non-parents feel more confident in the city with pint-sized peeps on the prowl? [Salon]
