Pontiac megastructure alert: the city famous for letting the Silverdome go for a song in 2009 is planning to spend up to $2 million to demolish the Phoenix Center, a downtown parking garage and event venue that is apparently as hard to keep up as it is gigantic. The city's emergency manager says that the structure, a centerpiece of 1970s Urban Renewal that was last improved in 2004, just costs the cash-strapped city too much to maintain. Its replacement? A scenic parking lot. Pontiac downtown drive-in theater, anyone? [Detroit News]
