It's Coming Down: Hotel Charlevoix Faces Demo Within 45 Days

New, 21 comments

The Hotel Charlevoix will be demolished within the next 45 days at the expense of longtime owner Ralph Sachs, says Detroit 2020. According to Nate Ford, director of the city's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental department, utilities are currently being capped in anticipation of the impending demo, which will come over 30 years after Sachs originally purchased the building. A judge granted Sachs permission to demo the building over a month ago, but will it actually happen? Perhaps, but evidence suggests that adhering to city deadlines is the only thing Sachs hates more than maintaining buildings. Those feeling nostalgic can visit Historic Detroit's piece on the Charlevoix to learn what sort of history Detroit will be losing.
