When S.N. Syed realized the Hamtramck bungalow he picked up in the tax auction was unsalvageable, he made an admirable decision: Demo the house, and collaborate with the city to include neighbors in designing a pocket park for the empty lot. Eight hundred invites were sent out, but after "one of the most extensive public outreach endeavors that the [Community and Economic Development] department has ever taken on," just twelve neighbors showed up to the meeting. Their decision: leave the lot as "vacant green space." [Hamtramck Review]
