Building Acquired: Gilbert Makes it Official With 1001 Woodward

New, 18 comments

Local building hoarder Dan Gilbert has made it official with 1001 Woodward, a Campus Martius skyscraper of 23 floors and 275,000 square feet. Gilbert has been eyeing the building hungrily since at least early January, when previous owner Dimitrios "Jim" Papas said Gilbert appeared ready to finalize the deal, possibly by the end of that month. Now that it's for real, we can officially say that Dan Gilbert owns a total of 2.9 million square feet of commercial and residential space downtown. Something worth noting is 1001 Woodward's parking deck, which gives Gilbert control over 758 precious spaces (and the CVS below) near Campus Martius. Should Gilbert ever seriously be interested buying the nearby David Stott Building, he would now be able to offer those tenants a bit of parking room.
