David Whitney Work Finally Starting Up After Months of Delay

New, 3 comments

Though developers originally scheduled the Whitney Building's restorations to begin last September, work was repeatedly delayed while developers scooped up the necessary financing. Six months and $8.5M state dollars later, renovations officially kick off tomorrow. Wedged between Woodward Avenue and Washington Boulevard, the project promises a dramatic transformation that could be the tipping point for revitalization on both streets. By the time the dust settles sometime next year, the building will feature 105 apartments and 135 hotel rooms by Aloft. Something worth looking forward to? The Whitney's signature atrium, four stories of terra cotta and marble grandeur capped with a massive skylight. How exactly the atrium's storefronts will be used is still a mystery, but we're expecting at least a few juicy details (and Governor Snyder himself) at tomorrow morning's groundbreaking ceremony.
