Detroit Tunnel Visions

New, 8 comments

The Michigan Central Railway Tunnel is Detroit's only rail link to Canada. It's also incredibly old and tiny, dating back to 1909 when Detroit looked like this. Half-baked plans for a new tunnel just 150 feet west of the old one have been floating around for years, but proponents of what's being called the Continental Rail Gateway seem optimistic that construction could start as early as next year. Should that happen, officials are saying that the well-maintained old tunnel could one day see use carrying cross-border passenger trains. [Det News]
