Detroit's eastern border with Grosse Point Park is marked by Fox Creek, a little-known canal running the length of the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood. The canal is largely hidden and has an interesting history as a smuggling route for bootleggers bringing liquor back from Canada during prohibition. Today we love Fox Creek not only for providing a unique kayaking venue, but for giving Detroit two residential islands: Harbor Island and Klenk Streets. If this is all news to you, take a peek at last summer's Curbed photo tour of Klenk, since which we've been keeping an eye out for available real estate. Alas, housing turnover of any sort is uncommon on the islands (which is probably why they're so well-kept), so we can't help but bring you this canalfront rental on Harbor Island. Three bedrooms are inside this 2,000-square-foot island abode, with 2.5 baths and some major canal frontage. The house's weird roof protrusion is described as a "bonus room," which can be used as a bedroom. The huge living room boasts cove ceilings, while the basement includes a wet bar and laundry. Spend your days outside grilling on the shaded patio or enjoying the swing on the canal-side sun deck. Bonuses include laundry machines, central air, a security system, and all new paint and carpeting. Total rent: $1,230.
