GAR Building Smashes Glass Block to Reveal Hidden Storefronts

New, 7 comments

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) building's long lost storefronts are finally being reopened after spending the last several decades hidden beneath layers of glass block, plywood, and trash. For those keeping track, it has now been 16 months since Mindfield, a creative studio, traded the city $220,000 for ownership of the castle back in November 2011. Since then, a "dream team" of historic specialists and carpenters have been bringing the building back to life in the most meticulous manner imaginable, at one point even giving the facade a much-needed bath. The GAR is expected to finish up major renovations this fall.
