Insatiable Midtown Demands More Mixed-Use Development

New, 25 comments

Midtown has YET ANOTHER major development project on deck, releasing a fresh Request for Proposals (RFP) document demanding more mixed-use construction. In the crosshairs this time: a 1.6-acre surface parking lot adjacent to the University Tower, an 11-story high-rise built by Wayne State in 1995. The RFP calls for a new building between four and seven stories with ground floor retail and high-end apartments targeting grad students and young professionals up above. That's about it—most of the other guidelines are basic don't-be-an-idiot tips, like reminding the developer to "enhance the pedestrian experience," while avoiding "large areas of blank wall." The chosen developer is expected to begin working this summer, finishing up by fall of 2015.
