Having successfully courted a mix of big-box retail and smaller chains, we originally thought of the Gateway Marketplace development as the successful counterpoint to the State Fairgrounds buffoonery going on next door. Now we're not so sure. Developer REDICO originally declared Gateway Marketplace ("The first major retail development and national grocer within Detroit in over two decades!") would be open by May 31. Gateway's website now reads "Late summer 2013," which—in case you don't speak developer— means "we'll get back to you." The cherry on top? Eminem is being asked to appear at some sort of a "celebration" the shopping center is hosting on the 10th anniversary of the film 8 Mile. Because the shopping center is on 8 Mile. Get it?
