Here's a window into the downtown Detroit of 1964, when the streets were bustling and the storefronts filled. Much of the footage here is shot on Washington Boulevard, reminding us that the boarded-up storefronts of the Book Building were once occupied by restaurants and an office for United Airlines. By 1964, Detroit had already lost almost 200,000 people from its peak population levels in the early '50s. Don't mind the creepy man staring silently at the camera--this film was meant to be a test roll.
