Detroit's manhole covers are disappearing, turning parts of the east side into real-life levels of Super Mario Bros. In exchange for creating a deadly hazard, scrappers between $10 and $25 at local scrapyards. The heavy, cast iron circles cost up to $500 to replace, so the city has turned to marking the holes with orange construction cones, or old tires in a pinch. [Motor City Muckraker]
