David Whitney Down: Building's Iconic Signage Bites the Dust

After looming over Grand Circus Park for 54 years, the David Whitney Building's battered signage has finally been retired. The familiar red letters (see them here) served as the Whitney's name tag since 1959, when its original cornice was lanced in favor of something more modern. That cornice is now set to be rebuilt, as the Whitney enjoys an exterior restoration and an interior conversion to apartments, retail, and an Aloft Hotel. Tipster Jerrid snapped this shot of the sign's demise late last week, telling us that work on the Whitney appears to have picked up steam since we last checked in.
