FINALLY. The Gateway Marketplace's brand new Meijer threw open the doors at 6 a.m. this morning, bringing the City of Detroit that much closer to retail normalcy. There are reports of freebies at the door, but MLive is bragging that the real action happened last night, when Meijer apparently hosted a wine-soaked Meijer's Eve party. While we try and shake off that social shunning, here are some MeijerFacts with which to impress your friends.
· Meijer's footprint of 190,000 square feet is nearly 9x bigger than that of Whole Foods, which is a mere 21,500 square feet.
· Meijer Detroit has but one entrance/exit rather than the usual two. Theft deterrent?
· Our Meijer's daily store hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. From what we can tell, it's the only store out of Michigan's 103 locations that isn't open 24 hours. A spokesperson told MLive that the busses don't run 24 hours, so it wasn't worth staying open all night. Weird.
· There's apparently a small outpost of the Detroit Police Department in store's gas station. We're betting there are slushies in there, too.
