Once scheduled to open in May, the Gateway Marketplace and its long-delayed Meijer have been eerily quiet for a few months now. Luckily, MLive's Eric Lacy hassled some unfortunate security guard patrolling the grounds, eventually getting him to spill the beans. According to the guard, Detroit's first-ever Meijer will open up on July 25. Wait, what? That would mean opening day is just a couple weeks away, and we have yet to hear about a grand opening party. Whole Foods had a marching band and free lobster, for crying out loud! Is Meijer not rising to the challenge? We'll monitor the situation, possibly from the Meijer gas station out front, which is already open for business.
