Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Detroit's Legendary Jazz Venue, is Headed Downtown

New, 10 comments

Baker's Keyboard Lounge is among the country's most revered jazz venues, having hosted legends like John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. After 80 years on the corner of 8 Mile and Livernois, the lounge is planning a second location, scheduled to open this fall somewhere in downtown Detroit. Let that one sink in.

According to DBusiness Magazine, the lounge's ownership is scouting storefronts on Woodward Avenue and in the Capitol Park area, working with Dan Gilbert's Bedrock Real Estate to find a good spot. Architecture firm Neumann/Smith is already on board, working to recreate the intimate atmosphere, piano bar, and Art Deco stylings found at the original location.

While many businesses will only open miniature (or temporary) locations downtown, Baker's is fully committing. Their downtown space will have seating for 175-200 people, roughly double that of the Livernois location. Let's hope that's a trend that continues.
