Progress on Detroit's Terrifying Lack of Manhole Covers

New, 8 comments

Scrappers have taken to stealing Detroit's manhole covers, putting pedestrians at risk for an unexpected (and often deadly) trip to the city's sewers. This nightmarish problem is finally getting the attention it deserves, with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department telling the Free Press that 302 manhole covers have been repaired or replaced in 2014, with 42 left to go. Until then, report any missing manhole covers to the authorities and know that it's considered good etiquette to jam an old tire inside.
