Opening in Detroit: HopCat, One of the World's Best Beer Bars

New, 36 comments

HopCat is Detroit-bound. According to MLive, the Michigan-based beer bar—often rated among the world's best—will open a new location in Detroit. From what it sounds like, we won't even have to wait too long. The current plan calls for a grand opening this summer.

HopCat is known for craft beer. Specifically, a huge selection of craft beer on tap. The bar currently has locations in Grand Rapids and East Lansing, but HopCat Detroit will the biggest yet, both in size and selection. When it opens, expect 130 tap handles and 11,000 square feet in which to sample them. For some perspective, downtown's gigantic, multistory Buffalo Wild Wings is just 1,000 square feet larger.

Founder Mark Sellers has yet to reveal HopCat Detroit's location. For an August grand opening, Sellers needs to breeze through permitting and construction, which often means Dan Gilbert or Midtown Inc's Sue Mosey is involved. One building immediately stands out as a potential candidate. The Serman's Building has the size, the location, roof deck potential, and a rendering that seems to fit quite well.
