Will development finally arrive at the old Tiger Stadium site? George Jackson, president of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC), declared in a recent interview that a new effort is underway to lure developers:
We're doing RFP for mixed-use development that will include a field. And, you know, that's something that I've been saying for two or three years, if not longer actually...Corktown's a very hot community and they need housing and they need retail. And so, we want to do retail and housing and still have a playfield for kids." Housing and retail sure sounds better than Jackson's last "mixed-use" plan, which involved a row of stores in front of a parade float warehouse. Unfortunately, the RFP is nowhere to be found online yet. We'll keep an eye out and update when it's more clear what the overall vision is.
