Where Do Detroit's Non-Native Residents Come From?

New, 18 comments

Even if Detroit isn't gaining population overall, there are constantly people moving in and out of the city. An easy way to track that movement is via mobile phone numbers. People often hold onto their cell phones when they move, providing search engine Spokeo with an interesting way to analyze overall migration patterns.
Using that data, the above graphic depicts what states have the largest presence in Detroit. The undisputed leader is Georgia, which is the top donor state overall and has three of the top five cities. The top city, however, isn't quite so far away.

Chicago has the biggest presence of any individual city, but Detroit's numbers are largely from distant southern regions. Las Vegas makes a strong showing, though that could have something to do with Detroit's casino market, which is the country's fifth-largest. If you have any other insights, hit us up in the comments.
