Pour one out for the Temple Hotel. The storied safe haven for prostitution, drugs, and other historic mainstays of the Cass Corridor was demolished today, emitting what had to be an especially disgusting plume of dust.
Temple's demise follows one of Detroit's funnier real estate transactions, in which DTE Energy was forced to pay a hefty sum (almost certainly in the millions) for the ex-brothel and its scenic yard-'o-asphalt. DTE needs to expand a neighboring substation to power the new Red Wings arena, turning the Temple Hotel into one of Detroit's most expensive listings. The current owners bought it for $70K in 1987.
UPDATE (5:52PM): The Freep has more images of the demo in action.
