Detroit was one of the world's most important cities during the 1940s. Huge industrial muscle earned Detroit the "Arsenal of Democracy" badge during World War 2, but the turbulent decade was also defined by increasing racial tension. The Atlantic did some digging and created an unusual look at life during the era, including a several AP photos that don't often circulate in the better-known collections.
