North End's Shipping Container Home Arrives This Spring

New, 15 comments

Construction on the North End's shipping container "homestead" is going smoothly, with delivery expected in the spring. Funded by General Motors and made of 85% recycled materials, the 320-square-foot dwelling will live near the neighborhood's large urban farm (MUFI), where it will serve as an HQ for caretakers and visiting students.

For an added bit of poignancy, the container will be plopped down atop the foundation of a blighted home purchased in the annual tax auction. Check out the AP report for shots of the container's progress, along with ramblings about the shipping container's potential to lure millennials and possibly save Detroit altogether.
