The new retail landscape offers opportunities for startups that no one considered even five years ago. Example: Curl Up and Dye, the popular midtown nontoxic had salon will become JoyRide: Pop Up Rendezvous, a retail space devoted to pop up shops. The first temporary tenant, Z Ballerini, will lease the storefront through the holidays, offering men's travel bags, and other accessories made from leather and wool by proprietor Mike Ballerini.
Pop-up shops in Detroit have become a growing trend, and this space, which will allow as many as 10 shops to enjoy tiny store stalls, makes things just a bit easier. Curl Up and Dye's owner, Jennifer Willemsen, told Crain's that she chose this new path for her retail space because it would allow her more time to focus on her pregnancy, and because she felt that the area had good options for nontoxic, chemical-free hair care.
According to Crain's, the new venture enjoys support the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and Ponyride. Willemsen told Crain's that she sees pop-ups as a way to diversify retail options in Detroit. "I think it's the best for the community to get exposure to as much different retail as possible," she said, adding "There isn't going to be much opportunity for that because of the lack of commercial retail space at this point."
Industry group PopUp Republic says that pop-up retail now accounts for $10 billion in annual sales. Popular Detroit businesses that launched as pop-ups include Cinema Detroit, Bohomodern, Love Travels Imports, Detroit Fiber Works and Coffee and (___). Bohomodern was a finalist for the Hatch Detroit $50K prize this fall, another Detroit retailer that started as a pop-up, 1701 Bespoke, is opening a Detroit flagship in midtown, and Cinema Detroit has moved to its second location where it hopes to grow as a brand and as permanent home for independent film in the city.
