Vacant for years, the Wright-Kay building deserved a tenant that would do its unique storefront justice. Or, as we put in 2013, "something greater than another CVS." Needless to say, John Varvatos has exceeded those expectations. Dominated by glossy black paint and opulent furnishings, the high-end retailer debuted its new Detroit store on Friday. The rich design might feel suffocating in a smaller space, but the building's soaring mezzanine and high ceilings make it work. Offering everything from jeans to electric guitars, there is only one certainty in shopping at Varvatos: It's going to be expensive.
