$50M Plan Saves Historic Brewster-Wheeler Rec Center

New, 8 comments

Later today, Mayor Duggan is scheduled to announce a $50M redevelopment project that saves the abandoned Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center, an early landmark in the career of Joe Louis. Surrounded for months by a whirlwind of demolition, the lucky building somehow survived long enough for Mayor Duggan to declare it worthy of preservation. The city issued an RFP last summer asking for a plan to repurpose the Brewster-Wheeler building and develop the 6.2 acres surrounding it. The press teaser promises today's plan will "begin to rebuild the surrounding residential neighborhood."
