The 42-loft renovation we suspected was coming to the Valpey Building was just confirmed by Crain's, adding that work began over a week ago. Believe it or not, construction is expected to drag on for another year, but anyone especially eager for a loft will can pre-lease this fall. They'll mostly be one-bedroom units with a sprinkling of studios and two-bedrooms. One more thing: Crain's is calling this the "Pepper Shoe Building" after one of its former tenants (see the old facade here). Most experts call it the Valpey Building because it was built in 1896 for L. N. Valpey & Co. Reliable Footwear.
