The newly-launched Corktown Farmers Market has its grand opening tomorrow afternoon, right outside Detroit Institute of Bagels. The market tested out DIB's event patio with a soft opening last Thursday (as seen in our photos) but tomorrow's fleet of 16 vendors will be the real deal. Open 4-7 p.m. every Thursday through October, the market hopes to lure commuters with local produce and a good selection of prepared food.
It's crazy to think that two years ago, Corktown's gleaming bagel factory was still just a sad cement hut. Also crazy: Corktown Farmers Market is said to be the neighborhood's first produce market since the days of Western Market. It was demolished in 1965 for the Fisher Freeway, though a few traces of its existence can still be found today.
