One Bedroom at the River Place Lofts for $1,825/Month

Want to live in something designed by architect Albert Kahn, but don't have half a million dollars? For just a fraction of the ownership price, you can rent an apartment in a building designed by the renowned Detroit architect in the late 1800s. Originally developed for the Parke Davis pharmaceutical company, the building went condo in 2002. Right now there's a 1,200-square-foot 1-bedroom industrial loft for rent, and it has perks like hardwood flooring, newish kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and nearly floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows. Building amenities include on-site pool and sauna, a fitness center and a community room.

The unit is in the tower section of the River Place Lofts. It's an upscale condo that underwent a significant renovation in 2012 and has a new kitchen and bath, as well as a "second living room" the sublessor promises could work as a second bedroom. The deposit is $1,175 plus the first month's rent, so for just $3,000 upfront, you can live in an Albert Kahn-designed classic with all the modern perks (central AC, dishwashers, dedicated laundry). - Rebecca Golden
