If you're a newly hatched medical resident, this charming apartment at Commonwealth and Canfield in Woodbridge offers many features that almost make the 80-hour weeks bearable. With its huge front porch (that you won't have time to enjoy) to the backyard, the place has nice outdoor living space for fall, spring and summer. For winter, there's a fireplace to gather in front of, although it's decorative, so you'll need to buy a snuggie or find a friend to share sofa space with. At 750 square feet, the unit seems ideal for a single person or couple, but there's decent entertaining space, and even a dishwasher in the quaint, homey kitchen.
The unit has central air, a nice feature for Detroit's muggy, humid summers, and there's basement laundry shared between the building's three units. The kitchen has original tall cabinets and new appliances including the all-important dishwasher and a gas range and stove. The bedrooms are only 10x10, but there's a large living room and a dinning room. For med students or residents, the apartment's selling points—gracious space and proximity to Wayne State, Henry Ford Hospital and Detroit Medical Center—may offset the largest drawback, street parking. The landlord doesn't take pets, smokers, or bad credit (no co-signers), so you're likely to have a quiet study environment and working neighbors.
