One element of Detroit's housing market, the corporate apartment, tends to come in one flavor: generic. These units rent for upwards of $2500 a month, and many offer all the charm and homeyness of a really luxurious meat locker—if a meat locker had city views, concierge service and a fitness center. An intriguing alternative has cropped up on the market, this attic in New Center that offers a kitchenette (chalkboard paint for days), cute bath with clawfoot tub, and even Roku. The enterprising landlords offer bed linens, towels, and street parking for a mere $800 a month, with a two-month minimum stay required.

The amenities don't stop with (OMG!) Roku and WiFi. They include a full size bed with Tuft & Needle mattress (because who needs a queen or king when you're traveling for work?). The kitchenette comes fully stocked with dishes and utensils. You won't really need pots and pans because there's no oven or stove—just a toaster oven, microwave, mini-fridge and coffee pot. The hot pink bath has that clawfoot tub, and the owners swear the water pressure is "fantastic." The space has hardwood floors, and the lucky short-term tenant also has access to the backyard (fire pit!) and to the shared laundry…three full sets of steps below in an unfinished basement. For fitness options close to home, there's navigating your rental into parking spots (street parking + small spaces = upper body workout). This unit really is charming, and could be the right space if you're an artist on a large grant, or simply a business traveler who wants something homier than the usual meat lockers and Motel 6's. At $800 a month, it's even kind of a bargain, given the usual corporate apartment rents. Of course, offering it as a long term rental at a more city-friendly rate also seems like a way to go…depending on the level of interest in attic living among corporate executives on the town in Detroit.
