The Detroit Free Press is floating rumors that Dan Gilbert wants to buy the failed Wayne County jail site and the Guardian Building. As we reported in June, since buying the 1929 Wirt C. Rowland-designed structure, Wayne County has poured a ton of cash into the Guardian's renovation, and still owes tens of millions on the property and other pricey items (cough, fail jail, cough) downtown. The Guardian is a stunning art deco showplace, and the county's financial disaster does have the minor upside of giving us an excuse to share a nice gallery of Guardian Building porn.
