Apartment Hunting in Detroit: Bargain Hunter Edition

Corktown used to be the place for cheap, cool apartments, but since the advent of Slow's, Gold Cash Gold and general, artsy hipsterdom, this certainly isn't true anymore. For $1300 a month, you can live in the cottage of your dreams. Of course, for the same price, you can make mortgage payments something similar, though it probably won't be in that neighborhood. Hunting for a Motor City dream apartment on a budget? Here's an idea of what $700, $850 and $1300 gets you.

1) Old Redford Town Homes

Located near Old Redford in Detroit, these town homes have hardwood floors, off street parking and in-unit laundry. The second story makes roommate situations in the 2-bedroom, 1-bath rental tolerable. While it's not a trendy address, there's something to be said for the nice old-school touches and a clean, affordable space. These landlords have a no-pet policy, so if you have a four-legged companion, you're out of luck. Rent: $700 a month. Deposit: $1050. Utilities included: None.

2) 61 Peterboro

If you want old Detroit charm on a budget, this Midtown apartment may be the place. Amenties include hardwood floors, wrought iron gates, two secure parking spaces, and a backyard deck, perfect for entertaining. The bath and kitchen are both newly updated, and the rental is eligible for the Live Midtown and Live Downtown incentives. There's also central air and coin-op laundry. This place doesn't take dogs, but cats are welcome. Rent: $850. Utilities included: Water.

3) 1028 Vinewood St

Hubbard Farms, an area of very attractive homes, including many older Victorians, has limited stock, so this 4-bedroom townhouse may not last. The neighborhood, close to Clark Park and Corktown is also convenient to Midtown. The 100-year-old duplex still has its original tile entry and the original fireplace mantle and tile. The kitchen has the original built-ins and enamel sink. There's a backyard patio, newly refinished floors and a brand new shower and bath. There's also in-unit laundry, but no off-street parking. Rent: $1300. Utilities included: None.
